At the turn of the 20th century, doctors sent patients suffering from respiratory problems to Los Gatos to prolong their lives. A number of large homes were converted to sanitariums to receive the sick, including those with tuberculosis and severe asthma. The Oaks Sanitarium on Montevina Road was the best known of many facilities. Los Gatos' reputation as a healing place had its origins in the British medical journal 'The London Lancet,' which in 1905 declared that Los Gatos, along with Aswan, Egypt, had "the most equitable climate in the world."
