Louise Van Meter (1868-1948) was born in Healdsburg, California. Daughter of a tinsmith who spelled his name "Van Mater" she came to Los Gatos at the age of 12. "Lulu" became a first grade teacher in Los Gatos in 1893 and taught for 35 years. Louise Van Meter is remembered for bringing the concept of kindergarten to Los Gatos. She was a long-time member of the History Club and could be seen driving around town in a Model A coupe. She lived with her mother in a small Victorian cottage at 266 East Main Street. The decision to name a new elementary school for Louise Van Meter came just before her death in 1948. PE025a
