George McMurtry (1865-1950) was a civic leader who served as Town Treasurer from 1887-1894 and from 1914-1948. The 1890 Great Register of Santa Clara County lists his occupation as "merchant." George's father, Dr. William S. McMurtry (1818 - 1904), and his mother, Olivia McMillan McMurtry, moved their family to Los Gatos in 1868. They lived in the town's first residence, the old mill house on East Main
Street. George went prospecting for gold in Alaska in 1898. PE004
