This rare circa 1908 scene was photographed in front of the Opera House, looking east along an unpaved Main Street. The man at left is walking past a grocery store located in the Aram Block. Effects of the catastrophic "Livery Stable Fire" of October 13, 1901, can still be seen. The fire started in the rear of a bakery on Park Avenue and quickly spread to nearby stables. The conflagration destroyed most of the business district of the town, leveling up to 60 buildings. Construction of John Lyndon's Vermont Block has begun on the south side of Main Street. That brick building was divided into five store fronts, with three of them occupied today by Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company. Note "el gato" crossing the street. BER028
